TreeHugger Dev: No Kidding, One in Three Children Fear Earth Apocalypse

  • JudgeRight · 8 months ago

Golly 'G' the answer is simple as simple can be. Stop scaring them with your doom and gloom stories in the classroom, on the TV, and afterschool programs. When I was a kid, I had the same thing only it was the coming ice age.

In fact, if you'll check your research, the more public programs they're enlisted in, the more scared they are simply because they're literally more indoctrinated with your fearmongering.

  • Ray · 8 months ago

When I was a child I had the same fears about nuclear war. I think now on some level kids are much more tuned in to the collective consciousness.

What's certain is collectively we have done them an indescribable disservice through willful denial, and these fears are not without validity.

  • Gwenny · 8 months ago

So are there any previous studies to show that this is different than it was before. I know in the 1960s most of us thought there would be nuclear war before we grew up. My eldest daughter at age four, in the 1980s, wished for the world to still be there when her kids grew up.

It's sobering to know our children worry, but without any frame of reference . . .

  • Jason · 8 months ago

We are always on the edge of some perceived Apocalypse; as a child in the early 1980's, I was pretty sure that we would end up in a nuclear war with the USSR. My parents had similar fears as children. My grandparents had other fears...and...go back as far as you like.

I think there is a twofold danger here; one is that children need to be given a sense of hope and security and some are perhaps not receiving that. Two, there is room here for climate change deniers to say, "Well this is always happening; people need some doomsday scenario to fret over and this is just the current thing. It will all pass; the big fears about a nuclear war were unfounded and so is all this blather about the environment."

Children are especially susceptible to negative language and we've perhaps, had an abundance of that. Speak clearly about the real dangers, but take care to offer a positive way out (and here, I'm meaning specifically in our dealings with children). The issues are real and tangible, but we need to remember the needs of children and how they perceive what is happening around them.

However, to look at the darker side; the kids may be right. The Earth may be irrevocably damaged by the time they reach adulthood. Perhaps we need to prepare them for that. It will do them no good service if we maintain this completely rosy view of the future--if that's not the future they will face.

  • Hutch · 8 months ago

This is great news! If today's children have some fear about losing their earth then they will be the ones to save it when they grow up and pass these traits down to their children and so on and so on...

  • librlman · 8 months ago

When I was growing up I worried about getting nuked by the Soviets. In the 20th century we became a global society, and it seems natural that children who are aware of the global challenges faced by adults should feel fear about what will happen if the adults fail. Would there be anyplace to run to for safety?

I think it's about time Sting did a song called "If the Parents Love Their Children Too." Or maybe Weird Al needs to parody Sting's "Russians" song and update it for the new big global fears of ecological disaster and corporate greed.

  • Charlie · 8 months ago

This is very interesting data. Do you think the reason for more minority children fearing the destruction of eath is a result of lack of credible information in urban areas?

  • Thom York · 8 months ago

I was told/taught throughout school that by 1980 there would be no more oil in the world and that people would be literally falling off the planet due to over population. This is how one learns to be cynical.

  • JJ · 8 months ago

    congrats enviros

  • Leigh · 8 months ago

Well, I'm not really surprised. My son has been totally brainwashed by the public school system in the United States regarding the horror of global warming. No wonder kids are worried about it - they hear all about it all the time at school. No offense to the principles of responsible stewardship of our earth, but some teachers are going overboard. I'd prefer that common sense and personal responsibility regarding the environment be taught rather than activism - you end up with kids who are happy to tell you all about how you're contributing to global warming but who can't remember to turn out their own lights!

  • mike · 8 months ago

I really don't believe so many children are so directly concerned and anxiety ridden about the Earth. But to the extent they are, you can blame the Global Warming alarmists pumping junk science into their heads. They have parents who are as gullible as children and pass their fears along.

In polls from times past the question would be do we fear nuclear war? That question has a basis in reality. An climate-based Earth apocalypse does not.

  • JR Cash · 8 months ago

Brilliant. Scaring kids into having psychoses about things they can't change, the enviro-lobby having convinced them and their go-along parents that they are personally responsible for climate change. And that they should fret over it.

Sounds like Mr. Crighton was pretty close to the mark: the real key to the future success of the environmental movement is to drum up support (and thus financial support). Sounds like it's going swimmingly.

I'll do my best to keep this tripey manufactured guilt from my children.

  • Richard Z · 8 months ago

Environmentalists promote fear and do nothing that can affect the Earth in any substantial manner. In fact, many of their solutions cause more damage than existing practises. Green used to be my favorite color, now the word is used in EVERY commercial you see no matter what the product. Pathetic. They are scaring the children and with the help of the teachers unions robbing them of whatever joy may be left of childhood.

  • Tom · 8 months ago

This is exactly why this junk-science paid for by greedy politicians should be criminal. Its one thing to care about the planet, but another thing entirely to promote bad science. I wish people would just sit back and realize WHO is actually pushing this science...its politicians. The scientists behind thenm are GOVERNMENT FUNDED for their very existance. If there is no Climate Change crisis, they HAVE NO MONEY and NO JOB. I am a climate scientist and the work that is factual actually shows we are in a much more dangerous cooling trend (after all cold weather KILLS plantlife!!! Warm weather causes it to flurish..DUH!!!) Our real fear is the possibility of another ice age, why is that? Because the cause of the cooling we are experiencing is directly related to an undeterministic level and period of solar inactivity (Violent Storms on the SUNS surface). prior to 1998 we had a marked increas in these storms which caused our warming...and now they have all but stopped..AND THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT IT...because WE DIDNT CAUSE any of this...and that is what is CRIMINAL about you folks pushing these scare tactics on our kids...You should be ashamed!

  • Nona · 8 months ago

Looks like the far left have done a darn good job of brainwashing the children into believing the global warming farce. Very sad indeed.

  • oldblindpue · 8 months ago

The actual science doesn't back the claims made by you global warming alarmist's. We keep proving you wrong over and over and over again. So now you are resorting to the opinions of children. Man made global warming will one day go down as one of the biggest hoaxes pulled on man kind. I am glad I'm not you.

  • Robert · 8 months ago

The Texas Panhandle was ravaged by fire a few years ago and the children did not flip out. Like their parents they faced it with courage and faith. The enviroment and the people are doing just fine here. Chill out.

Maybe its because Discovery and the History channel have programs about Armageddon on a regular basis. Of course it could be all the hype about how every thing we do is bad for the earth in someones eyes.

  • Tim · 8 months ago

of course they worry when all the hypocrites like Gore tell them the planet is dying.... we breathe C02, the planet wamed and cooled before man... but some people buy into any crap.

The planet has been here for billions of years and these poor dumbed-down kids are being terrorized by people that have no real training in math and physics on subjects that they profess to know.

Hey kids the Federal Reserve is a private banking cartel, 110 story buildings don't fall into their own footprint in less than 10 seconds and there were no weapons of mass destruction ... also read my lips no new taxes, I didn't inhale, I didn't have sex with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky and fluoride, mercury. msg and aspartame are vitamins and good for you.

They fear regardless of their parents position on the future of the earth because they are brainwashed with all that garbage in school

  • Eric · 8 months ago

"Climate Change/Global Warming" is the greatest lie ever told, and when that truth becomes evident, and we tally all the harm its proponents have inflicted on our economy, or standard of living, and the trauma they have inflicted on several generations of children and weak adults, the payback is going to be hell.

  • Robert G · 8 months ago

So this means the one in three kids will grow up to be liberals. Because liberals seem to fear everything in the real world.

  • TrevorT · 8 months ago

Well, yet more proof that if you feed children a steady diet of lying propaganda, you can get them to believe whatever you llike, no matter how ridiculous or untrue.

  • Adam Stetson · 8 months ago

I do believe that we should do more to help conserve our resources and our planet. However, I recall growing up and teachers putting the fear of g-d/earth in us that we were heading for another ice age. Why do people have to use fear? That is what has always been used regardless of the cause and it always creates more problems that it solves.

  • SteveP · 8 months ago

No wonder Everything you watch on scietific channels is gloom and doom with disasters galore. And the newsies have decided if it bleeds it reads. No wonder the pubkic is scared to death.

It's good to know all your eco-propaganda lies are working on today's youth. The next generation will be very eager to give up their freedoms out of the fear you treehuggers create using nonsense and lies. 2 generations from now you eco-communist wackos will have people volunteering to commit suicide in order to stop global warming/cooling/change/whatever new lie you come up with.

It's so sad that children are being abused with these fears by people trying to achieve political gain.

  • greengrasp · 8 months ago

Well this story certainly got my attention over at the DrudgeReport. Sadly my daughter has expressed fears like this...

  • greengrasp · 8 months ago

Sadly my daughter has expressed these very fears to me! I am surprised to see so many children share the fear(s).

And to further highlight a 10 year olds confusion she said to me last night as I was reading on my kindle... "Daddy you are wasting electricity and that is bad for the environment! You should read real books, we have plenty of trees!" Seriously...straight from the mouth of a 10 year old...

  • Black · 8 months ago

Seems like the kids are able to retain and regurgitate the Gaia worship/manmade global warming hoax propanganda...

  • Courteous Wolf · 8 months ago

This is what happens when the politicians lie to our children, through the school systems, in order to maneuver their thinking towards an imagined crisis. There is no global warming problem, in fact, we might be cooling. Which ever it is, humans are nothing more than a surface nuisance to mother earth. We are merely dandruff on Earth's surface.

One in Three Children Fear Earth Apocalypse

Now where on Earth would they have gotten that idea?

  • Marty · 8 months ago

Just goes to show you what 10 years of brainwashing by Enviro-statists will do. We started hearing about this stuff in the 70's only now it's everywhere. Thanks Gore.

  • Bob · 8 months ago

This is not surprising. Children are susceptible to any information they are fed, even if it is B.S. They are constantly being force fed information pertaining to this global warming hoax on TV shows and commercials, schools, the government. Its the greatest hoax perpetrated on mankind. Seas will rise, hurricanes will flatten us, polar bears will drown or starve. Its all just flat wrong. Parents need to get some intelligence and figure this out so they can explain to their kids that we do need to be good stewards of the environment, but there is no climatic catastrophe coming.

  • John · 8 months ago

If children get this fear from parents and teachers and other sources they should all be charged with child abuse. It's sickening.

  • Anonymous · 8 months ago

In the 80s we were taught to fear a new ice age. Luckily, kids usually challenge the orthodoxy of their day at some point in college.

Apocalyptic fears have always been popular, and it is no different now.

  • eddie · 8 months ago

Sorry, but I really don't care what kids think. There is a reason why adults run things and children do not. Let's make Hannah Montana the new Secretary of State. Harry Potter can be the United States' Secretary of Defense since his knowledge of defense against the dark arts is so profound.

Parents, you need to combat these messages of eco-disaster.

Ask your kids if they want to give up their house and live in a mud hut. If they want to be forced to ride their bikes in the winter for transportation. If they never want to eat a banana or drink orange juice again because those fruits aren't grown locally. If they want to hand over their computers, video games and cell phones because they waste energy and were made from petroleum-based materials.

Explain to them that regardless of what the actors and actresses on Nickelodeon preach, they certainly do not put it to practice. (Miranda Cosgrove walking to set? I don't think so.)

They'll see the light. My boys have.

  • Sam · 8 months ago

One in three children need to chill out and not worry about such things.

  • Gary Pate · 8 months ago

This is a direct result of kids being taught junk science about the environment. Especially the "Global Warming" hoax. Kids are being brainwashed & tramatized by the environmental curriculum in schools today.

Kids are worried about polar bears? They are more plentyful than they have ever been in recent times.

As more & more evidence comes out that "Global Warming" ended in 1998 I hope children will learn that adults will lie to them just for political gain & to be more suspicious of such claims in the future.

  • Aimsworth · 8 months ago

In other news, one in three children between the ages of 6 to 11 believe in santa claus. The science is now settled! The United Nations has announced a new expedition to go and capture the elusive santa claus and turn his gift making ability towards the betterment of man-kind. No longer will that racist hate-monger be able to be prejudiced against little boys and girls who have been so called "naughty" or "nice", and we can all just get along!

  • seventeen-at-heart · 8 months ago

These kids should be put to work mowing an acre of lawn. They'll see how difficult it is to have influence on even that much land, let alone the entire planet. With all the talk of saving the planet, I don't think many people know how big the world is, or how small our part is in it. It reminds me of the man who spoke of typhoons, hurricanes, tornados -- then sneezed -- and all was better.

  • Scott K · 8 months ago

To students who have had it instilled into their minds by Liberal teachers......yes they probably do recite alarmist ideas, and stats produced by 60's rejects. Socialists. Public education is abysmal.... and is more a platform for personal polotics than for educating. Our schools have been on a steady decline since the start of the 20th. century.

  • Kelly · 8 months ago

When I was in school the tv movie " Day After Tomorrow" as about nuclear war. And of course teachers taught us that we would be mutants because of Acid Rain. And that we wouldn't have enough oxygen for the world to breathe if we cut down more rain forests.

Global Warming is not proven, cannot be proven and we should not be punished daily because of it.

I spent my first three years of school doing "duck and cover," which supposedly ruined my generation. That threat is gone -- at least there really was a threat. Kids these days are hit with the "existential threat" of anthropogenic global warning far more than I ducked and covered. Then they come home and watch apocalyptic programs flogging the "existential threat" of the pre-millenial dispensationalist view of the end of the world (many of which were shown on various Discovery channels over the past two weeks). Bad science and bad religion.

Jack, don't worry about it too much. They come up with something new every ten years or so, dunno why. AGW is overdue for its departure but fading fast -- it would be fading faster if there weren't so much money in it. It's disgusting how much money can be made by frightening people, especially children -- and yes, I'm looking at you, Discovery Communications.

  • Brandon · 8 months ago

Congratualtions on indoctrinating and terrifying our children with utter nonsense. You must be quite proud. I remember the public school system when I was a kid trying to make us terrifed of a new ice age and a whole in the ozone caused by Aquanet hairspray. You people will just never be happy until you have stripped every ounce of joy and liberty out of everyone's lives.

  • Heartland Patriot · 8 months ago

I'm sure this comment will never make it, but...I guess all the money your buddies in Hollywood have spent making propaganda films is finally paying off...now you have all the little kids scared of the Earth "dying"...when you know it is impossible to kill a planet without some serious firepower all at once...I mean, several asteroids have hit this planet and it's still here...the hubris is thinking that the state of the planet NOW is the way it should always be...well, my kids know DIFFERENT! They know the planet has changed many times in it's long history and it is us who must adapt to survive...AGW is a farce and simply wrecks the economy for no real gain...why don't we focus on REAL pollution and REALLY make the air, water and soil cleaner? Naw, that might make sense...

  • E kaye · 8 months ago

Brainwashing the youth is immoral. Global warming is a fraud that piggybacks on the legitimate environmental movement that rightly decries pollution and shortsighted disregard for animal and plant life. Sunspot activity explains all global temperature change throughout history and the idea that man has done anything to affect the temperature on the earth is the ultimate hubris.

  • Honesty · 8 months ago

These children are correct. I was worried when I was a child that the environment would not be as nice to live in when I grew up and my fears came true. I remember drinking water from the lakes in Northern Minnesota. That is an impossibility today. I remember when suburban areas had dense woods and now they have given way to massive urban sprawl. The air and water is polluted, ect, ect , ect; so what kind of environment will these children grow up to live in? I would be worried if I were them.

  • Oh, bother · 8 months ago

A lot of the Drudge readers that have been linked to this page fail to remember what it was like growing up in the 50's through the 80's when our Government scared us all into believing that nuclear war was around the corner (and then pretended we could save ourselves by hiding under a desk). I was a teenager in the late 70's/ early 80s and distinctly remember being scared out of my wits that a Soviet launch of ICBMS was around the corner, as your savior President Reagan constantly reminded us of. Unfortunately, the Government failed to realize a much more real threat - the destruction of our planet through our own wasteful living. Even if the World's climate change isn't man-made, why would anyone still wish to waste our resources and pollute the air, land and sea, leaving our children with less than what we have. It's selfish, irresponsible and ignorant. You may not have voted for Obama or any Democrat, but that shouldn't make your care less about the future of our home.

  • Chris · 8 months ago

Hmm, 50 years ago I'm guessing the percentage would have been more like 90. Remember duck and cover? Whole lotta good that fear did... Perhaps walking around with the idea the world is going to blow up/melt down/exceed some carbon threshold regardless of what I do as an individual breeds a sort of nihilism that only contributes to problems of the sort we're in now, nuclear, climate, etc.

  • AMERICAN · 8 months ago

If that many children are afraid of the future maybe it's time to stop the fear tactics through marketing that the world is ending.

the world, let alone, the universe, has gone through much worse than humankind and it has survived.

The crap that Gore has marketed is that and only CRAP.

Antarctica is growing in ice, not diminishing.

There is an ice age coming and we are not even close to being prepared for that because the DECEPTION is from the exact opposite direction.

The term "global warming" is more marketable than "ice age". That sounds prehistoric... wait! We are prehistoric compared to the worlds much older.

And the next ice age is supposed to last around 100,000 years.

how do we survive that? That should be the question.

  • Joshua · 8 months ago

Well, first, apocalypse is from the Greek meaning "revealing." So first, the kids of the earth are afraid of "the revealing of the the earth?" I believe the word we are all looking for is "Armageddon."

And movies like The Day the Earth Stood Still and Battle for Terra help solve this problem? Aw, just give the kids some prozac and a prius - they will be ok!

  • Thomas Bombadill · 8 months ago

These poor children. It IS ALREADY too late. For the last 28 years we have been warned that if nothing is done to stop global warming within 15 years it will be too late... Well, that time passed and thus, there is nothing we can do about global warming, except hope it comes back before the earth is destroyed by global cooling, ie, climate change. It's going to be terrible to be eaten by a polar bear in Memphis when all you wanted to do was go there and eat BBQ. Oh, alas, alas alas.

One question, though, I am not stupid. The second line in the story says "One out of three children aged 6 to 11 fears that Ma Earth won't exist when they grow up." Where will they be as grown ups if the "earth won't exist?" Dang.

Now the powers that be are finding that they need to resort to scare tactics. I wish however that they would find some way to impact the poverty minorities more. They tend to have the most offspring. Although these findings are interesting, there are a couple of things that concern me: 1) The surveys were conducted over the phone. How accurate can a survey be if it was conducted over the phone with kids that are pre-teen and younger?

    2) The survey field is not big enough. There were only 500 kids interviewed, and then they were further broken down by age, sex, and geographic location. To have a legit study there needs to be more subjects.

As I consider it child abuse to tell a child they will burn in hell for not changing their sinful ways, I thinks this falls into the same category. Anytime you try to get a child into line by scaring them, its abuse. yes the earth is warming and yes we are pushing that with our actions, but what deceptive propaganda campaign has these kids beleiving that through this moderate and slow change, the earth will be gone or a much worse place in their life time.

Chris Hitchens is right when he points out that the green movement is in the early stages of a religion. This story just goes to prove this. we all have original sin, our mere existence. For too long we have lived in sin, and pushed the world and humanity to a breaking point, but alas we have hope. Be it Jesus, or Al Gore and his carbon credit scheme, which would make him obscenely rich, we have a savior, someone to lead us away from our sinful ways. But this requires a massive life style change, once again, as in religion, a change except for those at the top of such a movement. And just maybe, if we scare our children enough into this mindset, we can pull back from the brink of annihilation. Only with the green movement the extremists have taken something noble, a desire to live more moderately and more in harmony with our surroundings, and used it just as the religious right has used Christianity, as a club with which to force their radical agendas on all of us through our elected officials.

This is only a reflection of what they get drummed into their heads at school, earth day and save the planet hour.

No Child has enough information to make a judgment about the future of the earth. They do not have enough intuition to know real information from propaganda.

Further, I believe that the poor who live is squalor, and those who live in cramped cities will have a far more pessimistic view of the world than people who live in middle America.

Further evidence that a majority of kids are dumb as a result of ignorant parents. This fear mongering by dolts like Al Gore on the left is laugh out loud funny. The schools are obviously at fault as well. Critical thinking, statistics, and basic scientific methodology wasn't learned by these dopey liberals and soon their kids will be looking for more government hand holding. Is this survey, and article, simply more propaganda to push an agenda? First, I think it is weak to use children to attempt to gain sympathy for an agenda that may not be popular otherwise. Second, some of the words that are utilized in the report, like 'fear', may not be accurate to how a child may truly feel about the issues. Third, children have often feared for the future for multiple reasons for millennia, and yet the planet still exists and life has improved. Fourth, this reveals the amount of unbalanced propaganda that is taught to our children in schools and from biased media sources. Of course we need to have concern for the planet and its well being but we should guard against unwarranted scare tactics and attempts to strike 'fear' into the hearts of our children.

  • Chris W. Hart · 8 months ago

This is something I've been warning against for years. Nothing is worse than robbing children of their birthright to have a worry free existence and the chance to be just a kid. This notion has been destroyed by the fear mongers, Al Gore and Co. as well as all the other "the sky is falling" profiteers. It is reprehensible and only irresponsible and selfish adults will think this is a "good" thing for children to believe they will die because of their "irresponsibility" towards the environment. I truly believe that the same recognition could be applied without leading children to have nightmares and to believe that there will be NO world for them to be adults in. Shameful disregard for human life, freedom and a point for the self-loathing crowds who only preach doom and gloom and care not for children, old folks and or kittens and puppies over their own failed egos.

Grow up and care for the children with confidence and give them hope... not nightmares.

    Shameful.

Pretty soon, the only people that believe this stuff will be indoctrinated children. Has anyone bothered to pay attention to the discrepancy between the climate models and actual observation over the last decade, ICE levels that are at or near 30 year highs (both Arctic Circles combined), or the that Al Gore removed another slide from his show after nearly every snowstorm this winter?

  • Terry Black · 8 months ago

Actually, the science behind climate change is well-established:

    http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/306/5702/1686

Unfortunately, there's plenty of hysteria on both sides, as these comments illustrate. What's needed is a calm, clear, even-handed approach that gives our kids a realistic view of the problem, not dread of an apocalypse.

I believe the schools should focus on solutions. The antidote to panic is to take constructive action, and this approach is tailor-made for young people.

Get them to do something. Recycling, gardening, conservation, anything. It'll be good for them, good us, good for the world.

It's all a big shakedown!

Dr Allison said there was not any evidence of significant change in the mass of ice shelves in east Antarctica nor any indication that its ice cap was melting. "The only significant calvings in Antarctica have been in the west," he said. And he cautioned that calvings of the magnitude seen recently in west Antarctica might not be unusual.

  • regis49 · 8 months ago

IF kids are truly fearing an impending "Earth Apocalypse", its because grown adults with a political agenda are purposely indoctrinating them by using emotionally traumatic scare tactics.

Reminds me of when Martin Sheen said his kids were scared to death of nuclear weapons. Any guess as to what Sheen had been telling his kids about nukes and how the bad, bad Ronald Reagan was going to get them incinerated?

Left-wingers willing sacrafice their children's mental well being to promote false agendas in order to have their kids carry on those agendas after they grow up to be hand-wringing, bed wetting emotional wrecks.

This is a surprise? Education has been replaced by indoctrination in most classes in schools. Schools now exist to sow a crop of guilt, fear and rage among the kids. Once that harvest truly comes in, we will be well fitted for servitude. The real surprise is that parents keep sending their kids to public schools.

The best book written about the environmentalist movement was published in the 1840s. "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds".

This survey is a scam. It sounds like the very one that my 9 year old son took a few weeks ago. I was on the other end of the phone, (because I didn't know the people surveying and wanted to monitor the content). The survey was greatly flawed and biased. For instance one of the questions asked what you were most afraid of and the surveyor gave 3 choices. Global warming, air and water pollution, and a 3rd equally as dire but which I can't recall. My son hesitated and finally said air and water pollution. At the end of the survey, I asked why there wasn't a choice for "none of the above" and she said he certainly could have said that. Having a research background myself, I reminded her that very few s when given a choice of 3 multiple choice answers are only going to give those answers, much less a 9 year old child. At the end, my son laughed and said he wasn't afraid of any of those things, but that wasn't one of the choices.

I now know first hand how easy it is to design a survey to give only the results the surveyer wants it to give.

Though we certainly didn't know it at the time, I grew up in the waning years of the Cold War. A time when we all took it for granted that we could be vaporized with less than 30 minutes notice. The missiles and bombs were very real and so was the threat.

Governments on all levels are desperate for tax money and the carbon tax is perfect. It will be hidden in everything that is made or transported or used.

Therefore, it is totally necessary that it exist. Governments are depending on it for a new supply of taxes.

Oh yes it IS imaginary and just guess WHO is responsible for scaring these little innocent kids? - THE CLIMATE ALARMISTS! In fact it has been COOLER since 1998 which is OPPOSITE to the flawed IPCC computer model projections, ( http://icecap.us/images/uploads/7YRTEMPSSPPI.jpg ), and those computer projections were the ONLY, (I repeat ... ONLY), 'scientific' 'proof' that alarmists ever had attempting to tie human activity to global warming. If you do not think so then NAME WHAT ELSE was ever purported to link global warming to humans? The TRUE scientific consensus is that the sun and our orbit along with ocean current oscillations, specifically, the PDO and the AMO correlate incredibly well with US temperature as seen here http://icecap.us/images/uploads/EASTERBROOKPDO.JPG

In stark contrast and contrary to the opinion of a constantly dwindling number of die-hard climate alarmists, a correlation of temperature to CO2 is virtually NON EXISTENT! On top of that, the people who desperately attempted to blame CO2 doctored the data record concerning CO2 concentrations during the 1800's - they LOW BALLED almost all the data! James Hansen was caught red handed more than once doctoring the GISS to suit his agenda as well.

Call it what it is - BS!!! SCAM!!! POLITICAL GARBAGE!! Anything you wish but do NOT call it 'science' and stop scaring little children as though they thought the world is going to end as I did when I was a little kid when the threat of a nuclear holocaust was oh so very very REAL.

Without CO2 we would all be DEAD! So HOW MUCH is the 'correct' amount? Will the alarmists even DARE to answer that question to give us a target to shoot for? OF COURSE NOT! These PARASITES want to MILK tax payers as long as they possibly can sucking on 5 BILLION dollars of government spending/grants each year to 'study' 'the problem'. Yeah, Fred Singer received a ONE TIME $30K speaking honorarium from the Petrol Institute. Al Gore made over $200 MILLION on this scam, Hansen makes a six figure salary, the nitwits at the UN are raking it in... but Fred is obviously in it only for the money and shouldn't be trusted!

I bet they're swinging from the trees over this stuff. great, lets turn our kids into psychotic little global warming nut cases.

Kids worrying about global warming. They sound surprised, that it's not because of the parents actions, like belonging to a group. Hell, they're getting this shit hammered into their little brains in school!! ALL day long! They're shown a film of polar bears, doing what polar bears do, (bears on ice) and told they're is no more ice for them and they're all dying, and they're scared crazy! No wonder!

Pretty sad state of affairs, when they "target" kids like that. But it'll backfire on them. They're scared to death right now they planet won't exist for them when they get older. But once they do get older, and see there's no real change, maybe even gotten colder, they'll realize that it's all a big lie. And they'll turn away from it.

Liberals, I hate them. And you people are praising what has happened here. You're sick. DId you also think it was great when that kid in the UK died because he thought there wasn't enough water for the planet?? Why not? That's even one less kid to worry about also!

By the time I was in high school, the enviro-scientists were pushing "global cooling" scare tactics when we were having heavy snows in winter. However that didn't go anywhere. So now they're pushing "global warming" as their newest fear in an attempt to manipulate/control the population, even making people pay for breathing air with cap and trade.

We need to believe in the Lord Jesus. He is coming back and he will renew the face of the whole earth and reign for 1000 years before creating a new heaven and earth. If kids knew Jesus as their savior they wouldn't fear the future because they would have confidence in who holds the future. Not only would they not fear the future of this world but they wouldn't fear death either. Let us as adults believe in him and teach our children to do the same. Then we can have a deep peace regardless of the current circumstances and have a basis from which to make sound decisions in life.

Believing that prudent policies require a well-informed citizenry—one well versed in the facts—we sought, with the help of survey research conducted by Zogby Associates, to determine what Americans believe about energy and environmental issues and the extent of their knowledge. Building on similar research from 2006, we report here on the January 2009 responses of 1,000 Americans, chosen to be representative of public opinion generally, on matters such as the sources of U.S. energy, the extent of the oil supply, the rate of global warming, the safety of nuclear power, and the promise of renewable energy sources.

The survey found that the views that many Americans hold about a wide range of these issues remain, in key ways, inaccurate. For example:

Forty-nine percent of respondents believe Saudi Arabia exports the most oil to the U.S., while just 13% correctly identified Canada as our top foreign supplier. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the U.S. imported 58.2% of its petroleum (including crude oil) in 2007, but only 16.1% of all imports came from Persian Gulf countries.

More than 67% believe we can meet future energy demand through conservation and efficiency. Historically, in contrast, energy demand actually increases alongside efficiency gains. And because energy use is not static, conservation leads to only marginal reductions in demand. The EIA projects global energy consumption to increase 50% from 2005 to 2030 and U.S. energy use to increase 11.2% from 2007 to 2030.

Just 37% correctly answered that no one has ever died from the actual generation of nuclear power in the U.S. Though the U.S. has not built a nuclear-power reactor since the nuclear meltdown at Three Mile Island in 1979, 104 active reactors safely generate roughly one-fifth of our nation’s electricity.

Sixty-three percent of those surveyed believe that human activity is the greatest source of greenhouse gases. In fact, such emissions are significantly smaller than natural emissions. The burning of fossil fuels is responsible for just 3.27% of the carbon dioxide that enters the atmosphere each year, while the biosphere and oceans account for 55.28% and 41.46%, respectively.

Less than 28% correctly believe that U.S. air quality has improved since 1970. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the six most common air pollutants have decreased by more than 50%; air toxins from large industrial sources have fallen nearly 70%; new cars are more than 90% cleaner, in terms of their emissions; and production of most ozone-depleting chemicals has ceased. These reductions have occurred despite the fact that during the same period, gross domestic product tripled, energy consumption increased 50%, and motor vehicle use increased almost 200%.

There have been some notable changes since our 2006 survey. Americans are more likely to believe that spent nuclear fuel can be stored safely and that offshore oil drilling can be conducted in an environmentally sensitive manner. Half of those surveyed feel spent nuclear fuel can be safely stored, while 64% of respondents favor expanded offshore drilling. As policymakers call for increased energy independence, it is noteworthy that a large portion of the public is favorable toward abundant domestic energy sources that could lessen our reliance on foreign oil.

Additionally, considering the momentum behind renewable energies and carbon-emission regulation, it is noteworthy that almost half of respondents believe renewable-energy sources will not replace fossil fuels and uranium any time soon—91% of our electricity is generated by fossil fuels and uranium and the EIA projects that 85% of our electricity in 2030 will be generated by such fuels—and that a plurality (49%) do not think reducing carbon emissions will be simple or inexpensive. Given the significant push for greater use of renewable energies and alternative fuels and repeated warnings about mankind’s impact on the global climate, policymakers must be guided by, and Americans deserve to know, the realities of meeting energy demand and the true costs of “going green.”

Energy & the Environment: Myths & Facts is intended as a primer for educators, journalists, and public officials—for concerned citizens generally—as we seek twin goals: an energy supply sufficient to fuel continued economic growth and environmental policies that will protect public health and the quality of our lives.

The failure of public schools to educate our children has been reduced to scaring them with misinformation about the phoney global warming pseudo science. Children need to understand that Jesus Christ will come first before the true global warming will take place when God creates a new heaven and earth as He promised for all that accept Jesus Christ as Savior. To paraphrase a scripture - what do you gain if you taxed every cow, stopped all farming to prevent c02 and saved every Polar bear and yet lost your soul and ended up experiencing your eternal soul set on fire hell's fire? Ask Jesus Christ right now to forgive your sins and to save your soul for heaven above and to be spared hell's global warming fires. I wonder how high the taxes will need to be raised to try to put the fires of hell out?

Wonderful..The left wing environuts have now added child abuse to their list of violations against humanity. This myth of man made global warming is approaching the idiocy of the flat earth society. Sure there is weather change. Weather always changes. Show me the time when it's been the exact temperature on the same day for years in a row. You can't because it's never happened. Weather always changes because the earth always changes. Always has...always will. And there is absolutely no provable, reliable scientific proof that it could be caused by man. But go ahead...ignore facts..ignore nature...scare the kids. If you really want to find out who's behind this...follow the money. Al Gore's made a fortune from his scare tactics...so have others.

Hardly shocking that children raised by environmental-apocalypse-now ritualistic-recycling narcissists are the most frightened ones. Why refrain from politicizing the kids instead of teaching them, when the ends justify the means? The global warming (oops, sorry, "climate change") Trojan horse is merely a more recent manifestation of the leftist passion for control.

  • Ster · 8 months ago

This is what happens when the LEFT educates our kids.

It scares them into believing any BS they throw at them.

Please, lefty-wackos... leave our kids alone AT LEAST until they're in high school or college.

I know it helps to indoctrinate them when they are young... but do you see what it does to them?

Were you indoctrinated when you were a kid? No? You turned out OK, no?

Then let these kids be kids. Indoctrination attempts should not be allowed until they are old enough to know that there is BS in the world... and can actually decide for themselves.

You hate religious people telling their kids that the Earth is 4,000 years old, right? You're doing the same thing.

Funny how the warming in the middle ages was "natural", but it's not natural now.

    Brrrrrr.... still colder than 1998!

When I was young I lived in the country in the 1950s had pretty good childhood, but I also experienced a lot of fear. My parents dying and nuclear attack were naturals, but I also was interested in dinosaurs. I was truly scared by big dinosaur skeletons in the Denver Museum of Natural History and had to be taken out by going down a back stairway. I remember being afraid that the dinosaurs had come to life and were following us down the stairs.

I also remember a dream where a Tyrannosaurus Rex came across a field, across the fence, and through my aunt's garden.

Bottom line is part of childhood is fear of abandonment, things you hear about in the news, and the unknown. There are a lot of unknowns in childhood and a lot of the fears are irrational.

You people don't get it at all do you? The kids aren't scared by any "Global Warming" hype.

How much "Global Warming" hype do you think they hear?

Think people. Kids are scared because of the actions of the adults around them. Plain and simple. Kids are smart enough to see what is happening around them.

This dose of reality is over, now you can get back to your political mudslinging.

  • bridget · 8 months ago

I'm glad to see this getting some attention. I also grew up feariing for the fate of humanity, due to public school indoctrination. I feared water and air pollution, overpopulation, and nuclear fallout! Kids can't really do anything about it anyway, and they can't process that type of information the same way adults can! My daughter saw Gore's global warming movie 3 times during high school, and my younger kids are going to a charter school instead.

  • Rocky · 8 months ago

Well, after getting my degree in geology and working as a geologist for years, I can say that the Global Warming scare is just that - a politically motivated scare tactic to gain control over populations, over land, over money, over power, over valuable industries & commodities.

There is no concrete evidence what-so-ever of man caused global warming. In fact, the Earth is currently, and has been cooling for about 10 years. What is more, geologically speaking, the Earth has had cyclical warming/cooling periods for hundreds, thousands, millions, & billions of years. That is what is natural and it cannot be controlled or influenced significantly by man. I do keep up with current papers and studies on the supposed GW/CC subject too.

Sunspots and vacillations in the degree of the Earth’s tilt also impact these warming/cooling periods; again influences much more powerful, more meaningful, and more significant that anything man could ever throw into the Earth’s atmosphere.

The accelerated chatter, alarmist claims, and “doomsday predictions” by the eco-crowd about Global Warming, which was recently renamed “Climate Change” for marketing purposes because people were not “buying the GW label”, is really just aggressive fear mongering and is all done for control & power over people. Don’t kid yourselves that it is not.

There is value in limiting pollution of our drinking water, our soils, or our air; what I am saying is this cataclysmic fear-mongering about Global Warming/Climate Change is what is not real.

There are myriad scientists (thousands) that refute the very poor “science” and so-called “models” that Al Gore and his nut job buddies are touting.

The mainstream media doesn’t report on the many, many papers and conferences refuting the pseudo-science on GW/CC. For the majority of the media, it just isn’t “sexy enough”, that is, it doesn’t sell nearly as well as the “Earth is going to Die claims”.

Moreover, most of the pseudo-science the alarmists tout is not proven, nor is there scientific consensus as they claim and desperately would like you to believe. And for those that don’t know, science is not a discipline based on consensus, either, nor should it be. Science is information based upon fact, not upon conjecture, nor on supposition.

Another thing, CO2 is NOT a pollutant! CO2 is photosynthetic plant food. They are selling you a bill of goods about CO2 for their Cap & Trade scheme coming into play in the near future. That folks is worth trillions plus!

Now let me think, where else have we recently seen all kinds of disinformation and scare tactics to pass all kinds of legislation that normally would NEVER be passed….ahhh, yes, it comes to me now, anybody hear of any trillion dollar bailouts? Uh huh.

Did Congressional members read the bills in that legislation in Congress before it was rammed down the public’s throats to know what they were even voting on? No.

Another classic case of fear-mongering to rush legislation through that should not have been rushed through. Don’t let them do it to us all over again with Cap & Trade, that scheme is a monumental power grab world-wide.

I had the bejeebers scared out of me thrice while going through school. First was the nuclear Armagedden caused by the Soviets in the early 60's, then the world was going to be overrun by people because of overpopulation in the late 60's - early 70's (a scare making a comeback, btw.) The last big scare I fell for was Global Cooling when I was in college in the 70's. The whole planet would freeze over into one big snowball in space.

Of course, none of it came to pass and never will, but childhood anxiety is forever. Let's stop scaring the kids. Disney and Mother Goose have been scaring the cr*p out kids for years and are quite good at it.

They are being fed the wrong fears

Of all the ways the planet can get messed up, CO2 and AGW are not among them.

Oversized CMEs, Asteroids, Super Volcanoes, or event just an Ice Age resulting from a prolonged slowdown in solar activity, are all far more plausible.

If your looking for a Man made option then: Nukes, a man made super virus, or a runaway nano-assembly replication are grater cause for concern.

The arctic and antarctic are both growing (not shrinking), and have been for years.

The east antarctic is growing 5 times faster (by actual volume) than the west antarctic has shrunk.

The polar bares and seals are both doing quite well.

Solar activity has slowed down; and, is expected to stay slow for, perhaps, up to 50 years. We have been, and are continuing to experience, a global cooling period. The old farmers alminac has correctly predicted this turn of events. The IPCC editors, Mr Hanson, and AlGore have not.

The only things endangered by man made CO2 are our wallets - and that's not from the smoke stacks; but, the mouths of the politicians cramming cap & trade down the world's throat.

The earth is a closed ecosystem (nothing gets in – except weightless sunlight and some meteoric dust; and nothing gets out – except some satellite debris)

Ecosystems are generally stable, but the earth has a tumultuous, periodic (but quite natural) ‘correction’ that occurs every thirteen thousand years: the poles build up two trillion and eighty billion tons of ice which moves, along with the entire crust, to the equator..

The common explanation for the geography of the Antarctic land mass is that ‘it was once part of another land mass and drifted to the South Pole over many years’.

But that does not explain how it got underneath the ice.

What if something else happened? What if, like clockwork, every thirteen thousand years the entire earth's crust (only thirteen miles thick floating over eight thousand miles of molten lava) shifts because of the weight of this ice on the poles ends up on the equator after the thin crust slides across the molten liquid rock underneath in a huge spiral movement? If so, then the kids are right.

We do not know how long this ‘correction’ takes, but it is catastrophic, with tectonic plates shifting, molten lave bursting from cracks in the plates - the earth literally moves, the whole earth’s hard crust, as a unit.

The now equatorial polar ice masses then melt causing a rise in coastal sea levels up to 400 feet and the Antarctic continent is under the South Pole – hello, Lost City of Atlantis.

Recorded history only goes back five thousand years, before that is myth and oral tradition.

Yet very mythological ‘oral tradition’ on the planet, from South America to Africa to the east is virtually identical, speaking of an 'end of the world' scenario - fire, mountains (the sky) falling, earth moving (the crust shifting), volcanoes (tectonic plates shifting and breaking), followed by a flood (the poles, now on the equator, melting.)

There are specific, mathematically correct, geophysical proofs recently recorded by Mr. Graham Hancock, author of 'Fingerprints of the Gods' (an unfortunate positioning in image and market position terms – the book’s in there with fake gods from Sirius, lizard people and other fanciful and bizarre inventions, so reserve judgment until you read it.)

Hancock is not in that realm. His work is scientifically impeccable and has convinced me that this is certainly if not fact, then at the very least worthy a serious mainstream scientific investigation.

Because if he is right - and there is no available argument to the contrary that I have so far found - we have less than three hundred years to prepare for the next cataclysmic shift of the earth’s crust.

Or we melt the poles, starting now (after we have all convinced ourselves that the closed, unbalanced ecosystem conclusion is indeed not such a remote possibility, depolitcized and demonetized the planet’s ‘Odious Debt’ and stopped killing each other.)

  • bristol mercheson · 8 months ago

Well duh! I wonder how this could be possible. I'm almost speechless. Suppose it might have something to do with the kind of scare tactics being used today by various "green" proponents and supporters.

Given the irresponsible actions of this group I would have been surprised by any other survey outcome. Indeed, with the outrageous TV, movie and print media barrage being aimed at this very vulnerable and impressionable demographic it's a miracle any of these young people still are able to function or are willing to leave their homes for fear their lives are doomed anyway by global warming, "mysterious" sun activity, fires, volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, wars, famine - or any combination of these and other factors.

  • Ben · 8 months ago

First and formost, your survey of 500 kids by phone raises some questions for me about the methodology. I doubt the data is statistically significant enough to extrapolate much.

Second, your conclusions seem a little specious, too. All this information tells us is that kids are getting brainwashed. Should anyone be proud of the fact that we've literally frightened our children into a panic in order to get them to recycle more so that a handful lobbyists and scientists have job security?

  • derekcrane · 8 months ago

In the 1950s kids were scared of the Ruskies incinerating us with their 100 megaton bombs. During the 1970s the Club of Rome and Paul Ehrlich warned us about Global Cooling and our diminishing resources -- by the year 2000 we would run out of oil food and metals. During the 80s and 90s Genetically-modified food, chlorine and other chemicals would change our DNA and produce monsters. Now we have this global warming hysteria, if the heat doesn't kill us the rising oceans will overwhelm all but the highlands.

Only the nuclear threat had any semblance of reality.

We have just been through the worst WINTER in years and since God is in control, will probably go through many more so He can prove to these idiots that WE are not changing the climate. If my generations (Punks from the 80s) was any indication, the green movement is in serious danger of backfiring. Back in the 80's we were told to be afraid of nuclear war and it got to the point where nobody cared anymore because we couldn't really do anything about it. We were hoping for a war after a while, to cleanse the Earth.

Recycling is very nice, but it won't offset all the damage that planes and large boats do. It won't stop pollution from China and other developping countries. It won't change the fact that we are 6 billion going on 7. We can only control what we do and suggest others do the same, that's all we can do.

  • James · 8 months ago

Um agraham...nothing was stolen. In our Hebrew beginnings we used the term apocalypsis, (unveiling, as you say) which comes from tradition. Jacob didn't unveil his bride whom he thought to be Rachel. In our early Catholic tradition this term was used as the unveiling of our Lord in Christ. Now, as with most things, this word has lost its meaning because of excessive misuse. As for the fear mongers scaring children... when I was a child 'they' tried to convince us that the coming ice age, nuclear war and overpopulation would destroy us all. Then we were inundated with false statistics about AIDS, et. al. Now the new religion is global warming. These can have their doom for themselves. I know the forest well, as I can touch and see. I look to that which is simply Eternal, without beginning or end, without condition...God alone.

When I was a teenager in the early 90's, I'll never forget when someone came into our class and said "in ten years, 1 in every 6 people will have aids"... then he proceded to go through the entire class counting every 6th person, and saying "you will have aids".

I guess the moral of the story is that people just want to scare you. and you can take most of the fear mongering with zero credability.

even in biblical times people were talking about the end of the world using the same fear tactics.

the only 2 things that are scarier than death to a human being is, fear of the end of the world and fear of going to hell in the afterlife...and people have been p[laying off these deep seeded fears for as long as we have been on the earth.

This is why I send my children to a Christian school. At least the end of the world that Christians envision involves the birth of something new. ie there is hope.

In a nihilistic secular world, the only motivation is fear, since there is not a solid foundation for faith, hope or love.

Protect your kids from the eco-fundamentalists, the feminist fundamentalists, and the gay fundamentalists, send them to a Christian school.

So, you're telling me that you polled a school's or two worth of kids: "Commissioned by Habitat Heroes and conducted by Opinion Research, the telephone survey polled a national sample of 500 American preteens—250 males and 250 females. "

And based on this little, little number, you wrote this article? Research fail!

Wow! Not being YOUR brand of Christian automatically makes one a nihilist? What would Jesus think about that? Keep your kids away from mine.

I think this is sad. It means that they feel little or no control over the situation. I would prefer that kids recognise that there is a challenge, but feel optimistic that we can all handle it. Fear just paralyses people. Optimism and hope puts people into action.
